The Protecting Friend
Prophetic Traditions
إِنَّ اللَّهَ قَالَ مَنْ عَادَى لِي وَلِيًّا فَقَدْ آذَنْتُهُ بِالْحَرْبِ
“Allah said: 'Whoever shows hostility to a friend (wali) of Mine, I declare war against him.'”
This hadith qudsi shows how protective Al-Wali is of those who draw near to Him through devotion—He declares war on their enemies.
Scholarly Insights
Allah's wilayah (protective friendship) is of two types: general wilayah over all creation through His governance, and specific wilayah for the believers through His guidance, support, and protection.
Supplications
اللَّهُ وَلِيُّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا يُخْرِجُهُم مِّنَ الظُّلُمَاتِ إِلَى النُّورِ
Allahu waliyyul-ladhina amanu yukhrijuhum mina adh-dhulumati ilan-nur
“Allah is the Protecting Friend of those who believe. He brings them out of darkness into light.”
