Al-Jabbar

The Compeller

Prophetic Traditions

الْكِبْرِيَاءُ رِدَائِي وَالْعَظَمَةُ إِزَارِي فَمَنْ نَازَعَنِي وَاحِدًا مِنْهُمَا قَذَفْتُهُ فِي النَّارِ

Pride is My cloak and greatness is My garment. Whoever competes with Me in either of them, I will throw into the Fire.

Might and compulsion belong exclusively to Al-Jabbar. Arrogance in humans is the worst sin because it claims what belongs only to Allah.

Scholarly Insights

Al-Jabbar has three meanings: the One who compels His creation to His will, the One who mends the broken-hearted, and the One who is supremely High and Great. The servant should reflect on all three.

Ibn al-QayyimBadaai' al-Fawaid

Al-Jabbar is the One who mends what is broken—broken hearts, broken spirits, broken lives. He compels all affairs according to His will and restores what is shattered.

Shaykh as-Sa'diTaysir al-Karim ar-Rahman
