Prophetic Traditions
إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَبْسُطُ يَدَهُ بِاللَّيْلِ لِيَتُوبَ مُسِيءُ النَّهَارِ وَيَبْسُطُ يَدَهُ بِالنَّهَارِ لِيَتُوبَ مُسِيءُ اللَّيْلِ حَتَّى تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ مِنْ مَغْرِبِهَا
“Indeed, Allah extends His Hand at night so that the sinner of the day may repent, and extends His Hand during the day so that the sinner of the night may repent, until the sun rises from the west.”
Al-Basit extends His hand in generosity, constantly offering the opportunity for repentance.
Scholarly Insights
Al-Qabid and Al-Basit are paired names. Allah constricts and expands—constricting hearts with fear and expanding them with hope, constricting provision as a test and expanding it as a blessing.
Supplications
اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلاَلِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ وَأَغْنِنِي بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ
Allahumma-kfini bi-halalika 'an haramik, wa aghnini bi-fadlika 'amman siwak
“O Allah, suffice me with what You have made lawful so that I need not what is unlawful, and enrich me with Your bounty so that I need none besides You.”
